IP68 and IP69K ratings: what the numbers actually mean

Two ratings that sound close and protect against very different things. Where each belongs in a Gulf plant, and where the higher rating is wasted money.

IP ratings are two digits with very specific meanings, and they are quoted loosely often enough that buyers end up paying for protection they do not need, or specifying protection that does not cover the actual risk.

The first digit is protection against solids. The second is protection against water. They are independent, and a higher second digit does not always include the lower ones.

What the digits say

In IP68, the 6 means dust tight: no ingress of dust at all, tested under vacuum. The 8 means continuous immersion in water, at a depth and duration agreed between manufacturer and buyer, which is why an IP68 device should always be quoted with the depth it was tested to.

  • IP65: dust tight, protected against low pressure water jets from any direction
  • IP66: dust tight, protected against powerful water jets
  • IP67: dust tight, temporary immersion to 1 metre for 30 minutes
  • IP68: dust tight, continuous immersion at a stated depth
  • IP69K: dust tight, high pressure and high temperature close range washdown

Why IP69K is not simply better than IP68

IP69K tests a jet at roughly 80 degrees C and 80 to 100 bar, held close to the enclosure from four angles. It is a washdown rating, developed for road vehicles and food processing, and it says nothing about immersion.

A device rated IP69K but not IP68 may survive steam cleaning and still fail if it is dropped into a sump. Where both risks exist, both ratings need to be stated on the datasheet.

What actually matters on a Qatar site

Fine airborne dust is the constant, not water. A dust tight first digit of 6 is worth insisting on for anything used outdoors, including handhelds that spend most of their time in a cab.

For water, most plant equipment is well served by IP66. Reserve IP68 for equipment that can genuinely end up submerged, and IP69K for washdown areas. Paying for a rating the application never tests is money that would be better spent on the enclosure material or the display brightness.

Read the rating with the certificate, not the brochure

An IP rating is a test result, not a design claim. Ask for the test depth and duration behind an IP68 figure, and check that the rating applies to the assembled device with its ports covered the way it will be used, not to the bare housing.
