A direct mount gauge is simpler, cheaper and faster responding. A diaphragm seal costs more and adds a small lag. The reason seals exist is that for some media, the simpler option does not survive.
Where a direct mount gauge is the right answer
Clean, non corrosive, non crystallising media at moderate temperature. Plant air, water, hydraulic oil and most utility services. The gauge sees the medium directly, the response is immediate, and there is nothing extra to maintain or fill.
Where a seal earns its cost
The seal isolates the measuring element behind a thin diaphragm, with a fill fluid transmitting the pressure. That matters in four situations.
- Corrosive media, where an exotic wetted material is needed on the diaphragm only rather than throughout the gauge
- Viscous or slurry service, where a bourdon tube or an impulse line would block
- Crystallising media, where solids would form inside the element
- High temperature service, where the seal and capillary keep the instrument away from the heat
The trade offs, honestly
A seal adds a small temperature induced zero shift, because the fill fluid expands. Long capillaries make that worse, so keep them as short as the installation allows and specify the fill fluid for the actual ambient range.
Response is slightly slower, which almost never matters for indication and occasionally matters for fast control loops. And a seal assembly should be treated as one calibrated unit: separating the seal from the instrument in the field breaks the fill and the calibration with it.
A simple decision path
If the medium is clean and moderate, mount direct. If the medium would damage or block the element, use a seal and specify the diaphragm material against the medium. If the problem is only temperature, a siphon or an extended socket may solve it more cheaply than a seal.
