Spark arrestors

High grade steel exhaust spark arrestors sized to the engine, for plant and vehicles working where a hot particle leaving the exhaust is a real ignition risk.

A diesel engine inside a classified area is a controlled ignition source with an open exhaust. The spark arrestor is what keeps a hot carbon particle in the system, and it belongs to the area classification rather than to the accessory catalogue.

Sizing matters in both directions. Undersized, the arrestor adds back pressure the engine was never designed to work against and the engine pays for it. Oversized, it is harder to mount and no safer. We size against the engine and the exhaust, and we ask about the classification of the area before quoting, because that is what decides whether the arrestor is a requirement or a precaution.

They also need cleaning. An arrestor collects exactly what it was built to collect, and one that has never been serviced has quietly become a restriction instead of a safety device.

What this covers

  • Exhaust spark arrestors in high grade steel
  • Sizing against the engine and the exhaust rather than a generic fit
  • Specified alongside the area classification on site
  • Units for plant, generators and vehicles working in classified areas
  • Guidance on cleaning intervals and in service checks

What shapes this work

Back pressure is the hidden cost

An arrestor that is too small for the engine raises exhaust back pressure, and the engine carries that for the rest of its life. Sizing is an engine decision before it is a safety one.

The area classification decides the duty

Whether an arrestor is mandatory, and how it has to perform, comes from the classification of the area the machine works in. That is the first question, not the last.

An arrestor nobody cleans stops being one

Carbon accumulates by design. Without a cleaning interval written into the engine schedule, the part that was fitted for safety ends up restricting the exhaust instead.

Questions buyers ask about this

How do I know which size I need?

From the engine and the exhaust, not from the vehicle model. Send the engine make and rating along with a photograph of the exhaust where the arrestor would sit, and we will size it.

Do spark arrestors need servicing?

Yes. They collect carbon, which is what they are for, and a clogged arrestor restricts the exhaust. Put a cleaning interval alongside the rest of the engine schedule.

Is a spark arrestor the same thing as a silencer?

No. A silencer manages noise, an arrestor manages hot particles leaving the exhaust. Some units do both, but one is not a substitute for the other.
